Our Story
Where It All Began
In the 1950s, a small worshipping community in Southern California established themselves as Westminster Presbyterian Church of Temple City. The church grew steadily, eventually becoming a recognized hub in the city.
Nearly 70 years later came an opportunity to partner with a budding worshipping community called The Bridge, birthed out of Arcadia Community Church.
The two communities found shared values in their desire to grow in faith, worship, and local outreach. Through prayer and discernment, WPCTC and The Bridge felt called to become one.
On Sunday, October 2, 2023, The New Worshipping Community of Temple City was born.
What's in a Name?
Given our new partnership, we wanted to choose a name that reflected the legacy we came from and the legacy we hope to pave. Initially striking our attention given our street address and as a nod to our city, the name began to reveal a significance that seemed to meet all of our requisites.
Oak trees can live for hundreds of years and are an enduring symbol of strength, resilience, and longevity. Their large canopies provide shade in the hot sun and shelter through storms.
Oak trees also are one of the most common trees in Scripture. They were used in the building of the Ark of the Covenant. The oak is used to represent the strength of King Solomon’s kingdom. In Isaiah, those whom the Lord will redeem from broken hearts and mourning to be used for rebuilding, renewing, and revival are called “Oaks of Righteousness.”
With a desire to be a church that will help people weather the storms of life, to have the promise of growth that is built upon deep roots, and to be a pillar of our city known to provide these things for its citizens, it became clear that this name was well-suited for who we are, who we’ve been, and who we feel called to be - a strong community of believers serving the community around us.
Live Oak Community Church celebrated its official public launch on Sunday, March 31, 2024. Welcoming those at all points of their faith journey, we pray to be a church that inspires, nurtures, and equips people to live fully for Jesus Christ. Praise be to God!
